Re-Entry Permit

Residence Card holders can travel outside Japan and reenter Japan during the period of stay granted under the visa status.
However, in order to reenter Japan while your visa status is still active, you must be sure to obtain a permit to reenter before you leave Japan and bring your Residence Card with you when you travel outside Japan.

There are 2 types of permit depending on how long you will stay outside Japan; Special Re-entry Permit and Re-entry Permit.

Special Re-entry Permit

This permit is applied to cases you will reenter Japan within a year after the date of departure.

To obtain Special Re-entry Permit, you don’t need to go to the Immigration Office in advance of departure.
You can process it at the airport when you depart from Japan – you need to present the original of your Residence Card at the airport and check the column on ED card for Special Re-entry Permit indicating your intention of reenter Japan within a year.

Re-entry Permit

This permit is applied to cases you will stay outside Japan for more than a year up to 5 years after your departure date from Japan.

In this case, you need to apply for Re-entry Permit at the Immigration Office in the jurisdiction over your residence address in advance of your departure from Japan.

Duration of the Re-entry Permit is 5 years after the date of departure from Japan.

There are 2 types of permit; Single and Multiple.

  • Single: to reenter Japan only once within the valid period of Re-entry Permit (5 years). Application fee is 3,000JPY for Immigration tax.
  • Multiple: to repeat reentering and leaving Japan within the valid period of Re-entry Permit (5 years). Application fee is 6,000JPY for Immigration tax.

  • Residence Card and Passport
  • Completed Application form (you can find and fill in the application form at the Immigration Office)
  • Immigration tax (Single: 3,000JPY, Multiple: 6,000JPY)

  • on the same day of the application

IMPORTANT NOTE

  • You cannot apply for Re-entry Permit or Special Re-entry Permit outside Japan. If you fail to obtain either one of the permit before your departure from Japan, you cannot reenter under your current visa status and your Residence Card will be void.
  • You cannot extend the period of Special Re-entry Permit or convert from Special Re-entry Permit to Re-entry Permit outside Japan once you departed from Japan.
  • In case you departed from Japan with Re-entry Permit (not Special Re-entry Permit) and the permit is not expired while you are staying outside Japan, you can extend it up to 6 years maximum (7 years in case of Special Permanent Resident) by applying for extension of the Re-entry Permit at the Japan Embassy/Consulate-General depending on the reason of the extension.
  • In any case, your Re-entry Permit or Special Re-entry Permit is expired at the same time of the expiry date of your current visa status. You must return to Japan in advance of the expiry date of your current visa and extend the period of stay for your visa status if you would like to keep engaging in your current activity in Japan.
