In case of a child who was born to non-Japanese couple while residing in Japan or a person who renounced Japanese nationality due to becoming a naturalized citizen of another country, and the child or the person has to stay in Japan for 60 days or more after the date of occurrence, he/she must process Permission to Acquire Visa Status at the relevant Immigration Office within 30 days after the date of occurrence.

Here’s the examples of specific cases;

1. Child who was born to non-Japanese couple while residing in Japan

Nationality of the child will not be Japan, so he/she must obtain a relevant visa status within 30 days after the date of birth if he/she will continue to stay in Japan for 60 days or more after being born in Japan.

Visa status of the child will be designated based on the parents’ visa status and situation.

2. Japanese national who renounced Japanese nationality due to becoming a naturalized citizen of another country

The person is not a Japanese any more and has become a non-Japanese resident in Japan.
He/she must obtain a relevant visa status within 30 days after the date of occurrence of the following matters if he/she will continue to stay in Japan for 60 days or more after that date.

  • In case he/she obtained a nationality (become a naturalized citizen) of another country.
  • In case he/she has had a dual nationality including Japan but has chosen the other nationality based on the laws of a foreign country.
  • In case he/she was born outside Japan as a Japanese national and acquired nationality of the country he/she was born, but he/she did not reserve his/her Japanese nationality within a certain period.
  • In case he/she had a dual nationality and didn’t choose Japanese nationality within a month after receiving a notice of choice of nationality.
  • In case the Minister of Justice has declared the renouncement of Japanese nationality to those who have a dual nationality.

(4)Documents depending on the situation of the applicant

  1. In case of a child being born in Japan: documents to prove the birth
  2. In case of a person who has renounced Japanese nationality: documents to prove current nationality.
  3. Other than the above: documents to prove the reason of acquiring the visa status in Japan.

(5)Supporting documents depending on the activity (visa status) in Japan.

GENERAL PROCESSING PERIOD

Within 60 days after the date of occurrence of the reason for this application.
In some cases, you can confirm approval on the same day of the application.

IMMIGRATION TAX

No immigration tax is required for this application.
