- In case you get 80 points or above at present or at the time of PR application: you need also 80 points or above 1 year before PR application.You need to provide the Point Calculation Table for each points (at present and a year ago) with the proof to certify your points.
Once you obtain PR status, you don’t have to worry about the types of visa status and the period of stay any more. In addition, you can engage in any type of job without a limit as well.

Tips how to calculate/evaluate your points on the HSP Point Calculation Table
Here’s some tips to evaluate the HSP points.
Category of HSP
There are 3 different categories on the HSP Point Calculation Table. br>
You need to use a specific table corresponding to your current activity and visa status.
Academic background
Basically, your academic background to get the HSP point should be related to your current activity in Japan (In most of cases, your academic background relates to your current activity if you currently obtain work-type visa status).
In case you have multiple degrees in different area of studies, you can get bonus of 5 points. Academic transcript might be required to confirm whether each of your degrees can be determined as the different area of studies.
Professional career
Your professional career for HSP point calculation should be related to your current activity.
Period of part-time and internship cannot be included as “Professional career” here.
You will need to provide documents/certificates signed by ex-employers or organizations to prove the period of employment and your mission/duties for the work etc.
Annual Salary
For the points at present on Annual Salary section, it should be calculated based on the amount of your salary (before tax) starting to be paid from the following month of PR application.

In case of applying for PR based on 70 – 79 points at present:
- For the point at present (at the time of application); annual salary from September 2019 to August 2020.
- For the point of 3 years ago; annual salary paid from September 2016 to August 2017.
In case of applying for PR based on 80 points or more at present:
- For the point at present (at the time of application); annual salary from September 2019 to August 2020.
- For the point of 1 year ago; annual salary paid from September 2018 to August 2019.
Documents/Certificates Related to Taxes, Pension and Health Insurance
Starting from May 31st 2019, documents to prove the enrollment/payment of pension and health insurance have been added to the basic required documents for PR application.
Here’s the example of documents required;

- Tax Payment Certificate for Income tax (part 3)
- Inhabitant Tax Certificate for the latest 3 years.
- Documents certifying Pension Premium for the latest 2 years.
- Documents certifying of Health Insurance Premium for the latest 2 years.
[In case you apply for PR with 80 points or more on HSP Calculation Table]
- Tax Payment Certificate for Income tax (part 3)
- Inhabitant Tax Certificate for the latest 1 year.
- Documents certifying Pension Premium for the latest year.
- Documents certifying of Health Insurance Premium for for the latest year.
In case you are a business owner (e.g. representative director of a corporate entity, sole-proprietor) who is subject to the enrollment of social insurance, the related documents to prove the employment/payment are also required.
To obtain the record of your own Pension enrollment, you will need to contact the Office of Pension (Nenkin Jimusho) or print the record by logging in the Nenkin Net website.

Letter of Reason
You should provide the Letter of Reason explaining why you apply for PR including brief explanation of your background, motivation of coming to Japan, your activities and achievement in Japan, and future plan etc.
There is no specific template for this letter, you can prepare it in free format. You need the Japanese translation if it is written in other language.
Guarantor
You need a guarantor for PR application.
The guarantor must be a Japanese national or Permanent Resident who can prove his/her occupation and stable income.
Freelance or sole-proprietor can be the guarantor, but a person with no job/income or a dependant is not eligible. In case the guarantor is a freelance/sole-proprietor, a copy of tax return form (with the Tax Office’s seal) should be required as a proof of occupation.
