Special measures to extend the valid period of the COE due to the effect of COVID-19

(As of March 10th, 2020) Due to the effect of COVID-19, the Immigration Bureau of Japan has decided the special measures regarding the expiry date of issued Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Generally, the COE is valid for 3 months after the date of expiry. Under this special measures, the duration of valid period will be extended from 3 months to 6 months. Special Measures for the period of stay regarding Visa Status due to the effect of COVID-19

(As of February 28th, 2020) Due to the effect of COVID-19, the Immigration Bureau of Japan has decided the special measures regarding applications for Change of Visa Status and Extension of Period of Stay from foreign residents whose period of stay is expired in March 2020. The Immigration Office will accept those application until 1 months after the date of expiry of current visa status. Amendment of “Guideline for Permanent Residency” (Amended on May 31st, 2019)

“Guideline for Permanent Residency” has been amended in May 31st, 2019. In this amendment, it is clearly written that “you need to have been adequately fulfilling public duties (duties such as the payment of taxes, public pension contribution and public health insurance contribution, as well as notification in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act)”. Amendment of “Guideline for Permanent Residency” (Amended on April 26th, 2017)

Those who is qualified as “Highly Skilled Professionals (HSP)” possibly have a chance to apply for Permanent Residency! New Format has been applied to ED Card on April 1st, 2016

New format of Embarkation and Disembarkation Card (called as ED Card) has been applied after April 1st, 2016.
