Job hunting/Business startup for Student visa holders

(revised in October, 2019)

In Japan, generally, students in university or college start job hunting in autumn in previous year of graduation.

If you are Student visa holder and wish to work in Japan after graduating from university, you should start job hunting or preparing for business startup while still in university or college. Immigration Office would deny your application for Change of Visa Status after graduation if you don’t engage in finding a job or preparing for business startup while in university or college.

In case you wish to be employed in Japan, your intended job must be listed in work visa category. In addition, you and the situation must satisfy the requirements of the visa status. If you find a job by graduation and make employment agreement with the company which is willing to be your visa sponsor, you will need to move on to apply for Change of Visa Status to a relevant work visa. If you couldn’t find a job by graduation, it is possible to continue to engage in job hunting by obtaining “Designated Activities (for job hunting)” visa status.

In case you are starting preparing for business startup in Japan while in university or college and are planning to set up a company in Japan after graduation, you should apply for Change of Visa Status to “Designated Activities (for business startup)” after graduation. When you complete registration of your company etc. and ready for the business, you will apply for Change of Visa status to “Business Manager” by the expiry date of “Designated Activities (for business startup)” visa status.

In case you find a job and confirm that the employer is willing to be your visa sponsor, you will apply for Change of Visa Status from Student to a relevant work visa.
